ZEPHYRHILLS BACKYARD DESIGN

Just as on many of my other projects, this Zephyrhills backyard evolved as the project progressed. I was originally contacted by Nancy and Don to design and construct a koi pond and a custom wood deck with some planters and benches. With the exception of designing and building the deck around a few existing palm trees, there was no request for anything unique, but there were also no artistic limitations, which often leads to some amazing outdoor living spaces!

The design for this outdoor living space started by just trying to incorporate the koi pond and custom deck together in an elegant manner. To do this, I designed one side of the custom wood deck with an organic shape to follow the contour of the koi pond. The koi pond was approximately 5,000 gallons with a dual spillway, shear descent waterfall and a 10’ long streambed, which is a spectacular water feature. As the construction progressed, Nancy inquired about expanding the project. Our first step was to build a second custom deck that was one level higher with a curved step and a stone fire pit intersecting both custom decks. A third tiered custom deck was also built surrounding a hot tub. This custom deck has built-in planters and benches, and a 12’ x 12’ pergola was built over the hot tub.

A full outdoor lighting system was also installed. Low-voltage lights were built into the skirt of the custom decks, risers of the steps, planters, benches and landscaping. The outdoor living space was also completely landscaped with an array of plants native to the Florida environment.

All aspects of this outdoor living space were completely done in-house by members of the Exterior Concepts team. My thanks to the crew for their motivation and effort, and to Nancy and Don for their confidence in us and the opportunity to work with them.
